May 2, 2016 was the official first day for the North Lawndale Police Youth Baseball League (NLPYBL). Energetic participants ages 9-12 met with their team coaches, many of whom are local police officers. The kids also became more familiar with Franklin Park, where all games and practices will be held. Both youth and police warmed up to one another quickly and shared stories about baseball.
The kids were very excited when they first saw the baseball field. I was surprised that they already knew so much about the sport, given their young ages. I watched their eyes light up with joy when the first ball was tossed in the air. On this day, BBF has won a victory in the children’s hearts.
